Spring brings sunny and still days. One weekend morning we walked around the streets of Camberwell. Every couple of blocks we’d see a house in some stage of demolition, while others were being constructed.
This time of year, my evening walk home from the train station is timed with peak golden hour. For a couple of weeks I took my camera to work and kept an eye out for shots on the walk home.

Carlton and Fitzroy are my favourite suburbs for shooting buildings, streets, and architecture. There’s something about the Victorian-era architecture, pastel yellows, and very abrupt and vertical walls that immediately border the street that appeals to my eye. Shooting these suburbs on digital cameras gives the photographs a clinical look that doesn’t match my experience of being there. So I shoot them on film.
All of these photographs are shot on my old Nikon with a 40mm lens. Portra 160 film handles the high dynamic range of sunsets, while giving character to blue skies and hints of colour to otherwise white walls, like the bricks below.
